Bob Grant - Guitar / Lead Vocals
Bob originally a drummer started playing guitar in 1978 when a neighbor gave him a beat up acoustic guitar.
Immediately fascinated by the instrument he started learning on his own and creating original pieces of music.
Influenced by Eddie Van Halen, Joe Perry and Ace Frehley; the obsession began. His first attempt was in 1980 when he
joined a cover/original band named “Deathwish” which lasted throughout high school. In 1983 Bob laid the guitar down
and joined a metal cover band named “Shock” as a singer with Neil Goldberg (x-Annihilator guitarist). A few years and
a bunch of bands later Bob decided to take his playing to the next level. In 1986 he studied with Berklee graduate
Paul DiBartolo (Spread Eagle/MCA Records) and guitar extraordinaire Gary Hoey in 1987. He then moved to Florida to
isolate and devote all his time to learning the guitar and taking lessons with anyone he could. After that he moved
back to Boston and in the late '80s he was accepted as one of the top 100 guitar players selected to play in the
Daddy`s Junky Music 1st and 2nd annual Guitar Competitions. From there he decided to combine his playing and singing
to write original music. Bob made a demo in 1989 and met Paul Sylvia (bass). Together with the help of Peter Schwartz
(studio drummer) they made new demos and formed local bands “Blackjack Squadron”, “Gridlock” and “Deadbolt” over the
next 4 years. In the winter of `94 Bob had a major accident. His right arm went through a glass door and cut an
artery and severed two nerves in his right arm disabling his thumb, forefinger and middle finger leaving him with
nerve damage. He rehabilitated himself over the next 2 years with therapy and his passion, guitar. In 1999 he
then teamed back up with Paul Sylvia and some acoustic ideas that led to the calling once again of Peter
Schwartz to rehearse and record what he now calls 13 COLORS OF UGLY.
“Music and lyrics are one way I can express what I feel and things that I have been through” - Bob
Paul Sylvia - Bass
Paul started playing in 1980. A few of his friends would hang out and listen to AC/DC tunes until one night they decided
to play some music instead, from there his addiction to bass started. Paul would sit in his room for hours learning
Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Geddy Lee (Rush), Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath). He became more serious about the bass,
so he joined and bounced around with local cover bands finally hooking up with an original band. In 1986 he joined a
hardcore Metal Band named “Warhead” and gigged around Boston. He continued his quest playing with local musicians
trying to get something off the ground. He then joined and formed the band “Third Stone”, a southern Rock-n-Roll
outfit. He recorded some songs and played some gigs. While gigging with Third Stone he met Bob Grant in 1989 and
has been writing the bass parts ever since. From there he joined the bands, “Blackjack Squadron” 1990, “Gridlock”
1992 and “Deadbolt” in 1994. Six years later while playing in a metal cover band “Pitch Black” they decided to start
13 COLORS OF UGLY and added Peter Schwartz who was writing with them throughout their efforts. Peter and Paul were
also in a cover band named “Gunther” in '96.
“As a bass player I like the 3 piece bands, it gives me the freedom to be melodic or just be simple.” - Paul
Peter Schwartz - Drums
Peter began playing drums 22 years ago in the basement of his parent`s house. Completely self taught he picked
up the instrument quickly and joined his first group “Crusader” at age 12 with his older brother Eric on guitar.
In 1986 he heard some vintage Black Sabbath that opened up the floodgates and his love for heavy music was born.
The influences of Metallica, Iron Maiden and Judas Priest as well as other heavy metal bands brought out his
creativity and he started writing his own material in the band “Wretched Grace”. In 1991 Peter joined “Stormwindow”
from Boston, their brand of rock music brought them to New York City`s famous CBGB`s club many times and they
were a Boston favorite in places like The Rat and Bunratty`s. Lots of live radio broadcasts and a WBCN Rumble
appearance followed with the band “Fleshflower” formed by Peter and vocalist Doug Thoms. Their theatrical
performances dropped a lot of jaws and garnered them a large fan base in the Boston area. When Fleshflower broke
up in the mid '90s Peter joined up with bassist Paul Sylvia for the short-lived cover band “Gunther”. Playing
obscure songs by popular bands like Van Halen, Pantera and Joe Satriani they played local gigs on the south
shore with positive response from the crowds. It was at the rehearsal studio that he heard the group “Grasshopper”
was in search of a replacement drummer. Peter auditioned for Grasshopper and fit in perfectly. Grasshopper played
their blend of rock, funk and jazz influenced music to packed crowds in Boston and the South Shore. In 1996 Peter
found his way into the band Mindflow based in Boston. With three independently released CD`s the band`s music was
heard on college and major market radio stations across the country and even as far away as Romania. Mindflow has
played in almost half of the United States, from Maine to Key West and from Cape Cod to across the Mississippi River.
“Times may change and the beat may vary but you never forget where you came from.” - Peter
